Non-disruptive scalability

With the StorageTek SL3000, you can scale from 200 to 3,000 cartridge slots and from one to 56 drives, all in a footprint that grows linearly in a rack environment. The StorageTek SL3000’s RealTime Growth capability lets you install physical capacity in advance and tap into it incrementally with Capacity on Demand license keys.

Mix and match drive types

The StorageTek SL3000’s Any Cartridge Any Slot and Any Slot Anywhere technologies let you design your storage environment the way you really want it. Which means you can use the drive types that best meet your access and storage needs: the capacity-centric Sun StorageTek T10000 drives, the access-centric Sun StorageTek T9840 tape drives, or LTO 3 and LTO 4 drives from Hewlett-Packard and IBM. In addition, the choice of Fibre Channel, FICON, or ESCON interfaces provides enterprise-strength adaptability in mainframe and open systems environments.

Simplify consolidation

The StorageTek SL3000 lets you consolidate storage into an eco-efficient library that offers native and logical partitioning, multi-platform support for mainframe and open systems, and exceptional drive-cartridge-slot versatility. This enables you to reduce equipment costs and save space and energy. What’s more, the Any Cartridge Any Slot feature lets you randomly use different drive and media technologies, eliminating the need for separate physical partitions, enhancing consolidation. In fact, compared to competitive libraries, the StorageTek SL3000 can reduce your footprint up as much as 50% and consume up to 10 times less library power at high capacity levels.

Centerline architecture improves performance

The StorageTek SL3000’s unique Centerline architecture, with drives located in the middle of the library, alleviates contention because robots travel one-third to one-half the distance required by other libraries, which helps you improve cartridge-to-drive performance by up to 50%.

Now you can take advantage of a refreshingly intelligent approach to storage management. The StorageTek SL3000 offers the industry’s most flexible solution for partitioning, sharing, and managing. Native physical partitioning requires no extra hardware or software, and you can create up to eight partitions that can be assigned for mainframe and/or open systems use. Plus, you can address resources at cartridge slot, tape drive slot, and cartridge access port levels.

Convenient local and remote monitoring

Sun StorageTek Library Console software, which comes with the StorageTek SL3000, allows your staff to easily monitor and manage the StorageTek SL3000 via a remote, network-based operator panel or an optional local touch-screen operator panel. Either way, you maintain convenient, consistent control, since the same functions are available locally and remotely. StorageTek Library Console software lets you:

• Display status and reports for the library and library components, including drives, cartridges, and robots
• Determine the location of cartridge tapes within the library
• Perform an audit of the library
• Run diagnostic tests and load microcode

Optional software adds functionality

With the optional Sun StorageTek Library Manager software, you can enable logical partitioning at the level of cartridge VOLSER and expand your open system connectivity choices.

Sun StorageTek ACSLS Manager software enables the StorageTek SL3000 to be shared in heterogeneous environments, including AS/400, mainframe, UNIX, and NT platforms, making it easy to match the library configuration to your backup requirements.

Enterprise-class reliability, availability, and serviceability

The StorageTek SL3000 reduces risk by using innovative technology that’s been proven in the most demanding enterprise environments. Non-disruptive, on-the-fly replacement of robotics, power supplies, and drives sustains near 24x7 operation. In addition, the StorageTek SL3000 leverages many of the components used in the Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System – the enterprise standard for reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS):

• Robotic communications and design that enable a track-like footprint and easy installation
• TallBot robots and scanner technology
• Library code base and StorageTek Library Console interface

Data protection onsite, offsite, and in transit

Sun also offers solutions to protect data onsite, offsite, and in transit, reducing the financial and legal risk associated with data loss. Sun StorageTek VolSafe secure media technology, which provides write-once, read-many (WORM) capability, is available for the StorageTek T10000 and T9840 tape drives. VolSafe technology complies with stringent electronic storage regulatory and legal requirements.

Platform-independent encryption

The Sun StorageTek SL3000 also works with the Sun StorageTek Crypto Key Management System, an appliance that provides a simple, centralized, scalable solution for managing the keys used to encrypt and decrypt data written by the StorageTek SL3000’s tape drives. The appliance is platform-independent, complies with Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification and runs without regard to application, operating platform, or primary storage device.
