| Overview
|
The IBM
TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame helps enable
StorageTek ACS users to increase the value of their current
automation installation by enhancing it with 3590 technology. This
leading-edge solution is designed to provide the technology path and
performance to help leverage current automation investments while
reducing the requirement for additional automation hardware in
addition to lowering environmental and maintenance costs and
reducing floor space requirements.
This solution supports StorageTek 4410 and 9310 ACS in S/390® IBM
zSeries™, and open systems
environments, including selected AIX®, Sun Solaris®, HP-UX®, Windows
NT®, and Windows® 2000 servers.
The IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame can be used
with a growing number of open system servers that support native
Fibre Channel connection as well as servers connected via the IBM
SAN Data Gateway. The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590
Model E provides an uncompressed data rate of up to 14 MB/sec,
approximately 55 percent faster than the 3590 Model B. |

|
 |
| Silo
Compatible components |
The Silo
Compatible solution consists of the following components:
IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3590 Model C12.
Each C12 can contain one to four IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape
Drives 3590 Model B1A or E1A.
IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Controller Frame 3590 Model
C1O. Each C1O Frame can contain one or two IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Tape Controllers 3590 Model A60. |
| |
|
|
|
|
 |
| Increased
capacity |
3590 Tape
Drives attached to a StorageTek ACS can use the 3590 Extended High
Performance Tape Cartridge, which has a native capacity of up to 20
GB on Model B1A Tape Drives and up to 40 GB on Model E1A Tape
Drives. With 3:1 LZ1 data compression, capacities can reach up to 60
GB on Model B1A drives and up to 120 GB on Model E1A drives.
For a StorageTek ACS populated with either 18- or 36-track cartridge
technology, the 3590 with extended length media support offers an
impressive capacity improvement. If the ACS employs StorageTek 4480
18-track technology, the 3590 improves capacity by up to 200 times.
If the ACS uses the StorageTek 4490 or 9490 36- track technology
with enhanced capacity tape cartridges, the 3590 can increase the
capacity of the ACS by up to 50 times. |

| IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60
|
The IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 attaches 3590
Tape Drives to Enterprise System CONnection (ESCON) and FIbre
CONnection (FICON) channels on IBM S/390 enterprise servers and IBM
zSeries™ 900 servers. |
The 3590 Model A60 provides one to four
dual-ported ESCON channel attachment features, enabling up to
eight ESCON channel attachments. With native FICON support, up
to two FICON features are supported on the A60 Controller
providing attachment to one or two FICON channels. The FICON
maximum channel link speed of 100 MB/sec full duplex (versus 17
MB/sec simplex for ESCON) can enhance tape performance. Both
ESCON and FICON attachments are supported on the Model A60,
enabling 3590 Tape Drives to be shared between ESCON and FICON
servers. Each channel can have up to 64 logical channels, with
multiple logical paths per MVS™ image.
|

3590 Tape Drives fully integrated in
a StorageTek Silo
|
| The 3590 A60 now supports high-speed location
to relative file position. This new capability can significantly
improve read performance for file-stacking applications that
access by file number rather than block ID. The A60 can also
offer significantly improved write performance for applications
that stack multiple small files on a tape. The performance gain
is achieved through the elimination of costly redundant,
rewritten tape marks, and the associated backhitch. These new
performance capabilities of the hardware can be exploited by
OS/390® and z/OS® and are designed to be transparent to the user
application. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
 |
| Flexible
configurations |
Up to four
3590 Model C12 frames with 3590 Tape Drives can attach to every
Library Storage Module (LSM) in an ACS. A maximum of sixteen 3590
Tape Drives can reside in a StorageTek LSM.
A 3590 A60 Controller can attach 3590 Tape Drives via a SCSI or
Fibre Channel interface. Up to eight SCSI-attached 3590 Model B1A or
E1A Tape Drives (in two C12 frames) can attach to a single 3590 A60.
With Fibre Channel-attached 3590 Model E1A Tape Drives, up to 12
drives (in three C12 frames) can attach to a single A60.
|
| |
|
|
|
|
 |
| 3590/ACS
Silo communication |
To support
seamless, reliable operation, each 3590 Tape Drive in a C12 frame
communicates with the LSMs Library Control Unit (LCU) using Storage
Tek's library ports. In an ESCON/FICON environment, 3590 Tape Drives
running in 3490 E emulation mode are identified to the StorageTek
Host Software Component (HSC) as an STK 36-track drive model. When
drives are installed in native 3590 mode, they are identified as an
STK model that can run as device type 3590. This enables 3590 Tape
Drives to be integrated into an existing ACS environment typically
without host software modifications.
In Fibre Channel or SCSI environments, 3590 Tape Drives are
identified to the StorageTek Automated Cartridge System Library
Software (ACSLS) as any type of longitudinal drive. This enables
direct Fibre Channel or SCSI host attachment to the 3590 drives with
the appropriate device drivers. |

|
|
|
 |
| Investment
protection |
|
3590 Model
B1A Tape Drives can be field-upgraded to the Model E1A, helping to
protect existing investments in 3590 technology. Media investment is
also preserved because the Model E1A drives can both read and write
to the previous 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape. Both Model B1A
and Model E1A drives can double existing capacity when upgraded to
the Extended Media Support feature enabling the use of 3590 Extended
High Performance Cartridge Tape |
| |
|
|
|
|
 |
| Coexistence
capability |
3590 Tape
Drives can coexist with varying combinations of StorageTek tape
models, based on the level of HSC or ACSLS that is being used.
The coexistence parameters for 3590 devices configured in the same
ACS with StorageTek tape drives are summarized as follows:

- HSC 2.x or 4.x—The
3590 Tape Drives are defined to HSC as an STK drive model. The
3590s can intermix in the same ACS with any
STK device models except for the model the 3590s are defined
as.
- ACSLS—3590
tape drives are
identified to StorageTek ACSLS as any type of longitudinal
device. The ACSLS client application must maintain the
drive-to-media relationship.

|
3590 Tape
Drives attached through a Model A60 Controller can appear to the
host operating system as native 3590 or 3490 E Tape Drives. Defining
the 3590 in the ACS as a 3490 E offers flexibility for application
set up and drive integration in the Silo environment. New 3590 A60
hardware enhancements improve tape cartridge capacity utilization.
Now, applications operating in 3490 E emulation mode that write
small blocks can exploit the capacity of the 3590 E model and
extended length cartridge. This capacity enhancement can also be
exploited by DFSMShsm™. |

| Call
Home function |
|
The IBM
“Call Home” function automatically opens a service alert when a
problem occurs with a 3590 A60 Controller. A service representative
can be sent to the installation and status information can be
transmitted to the IBM Support Center for evaluation. In addition,
the Call Home function can send alerts to a pager service so that
multiple people can be notified. |
