The 7206 family of tape drives are externally attached 4mm streaming tape drives designed for use with IBM RS/6000 workstations and servers.

Both of the 7206 tape drives incorporate increasingly sophisticated technology and higher performance. All models use Digital Audio Tape (DAT) / Digital Data Storage (DDS) tape technologies. The tape capacity, transfer rate, and reliability of the 7206 make it an excellent choice for backup, restore and archiving operations.

  • The Model 110, DDS-3, takes advantage of tape formatting efficiencies extending the cartridge capacity up to 12GB* and adding new reliability and performance features.
  • The Model 220, DDS-4, improves cartridge capacity up to 40GB* by implementing Metal Particle 3 (MP+++) tape technology as well as improved reliability features and enhanced data transfer rate.

The following table depicts the comparative features of each of the 7206 Models.

Many of the 1,000,000 installed RS/6000's and pSeries servers (over 100,000 !) are configured with internal DDS Internal 4mm tape drive technology. These users can take advantage of new DDS functionality. Each of the 7206 tape drives are backward read and write compatible for two previous generations of DDS tape cartridges. Investment protection is provided by this enhanced migration and data interchange capability. An upgrade to a 7206 provides improved capacity, advanced performance and a new level of reliability for a reasonable cost.

Model 110

• Data storage capacity of 4GB to 12GB* (8GB to 24GB* with 2:1 data compression)

• Data transfer rate from 400KB to 1.1MB/sec (800KB to 2.2MB/sec with compression)

• Read and write in DDS-1, DDS-2 and DDS-3 tape cartridges providing for ease of migration and interchange

• Media recognition feature which allows only data grade tape cartridges to be used for writing data

• DDS-3 technology offering improved read-channel performance, enhanced self-cleaning technologies, energy saving features, and fewer components

The IBM 7206 Model 110 external 4mm DDS-3 tape drive, specifically adapted for the RS/6000 environment, continues in the tradition of an excellent streaming tape drive ideally suited for backup, restore and archive operations.

The 7206 Model 110 continues to offer the successful reliability and performance features provided by the IBM 7206 Model 005. New technologies incorporated within the Model 110 expand these qualities. For example, availability and implementation of Metal Particle 2 tape (MP++) results in denser recording of data, resulting in increased tape storage capacity. With 2:1 compression, an effective cartridge capacity of up to 24GB is now realized. Similarly, data transfer rate of up to 2.2MB/second is attainable. The IBM 7206 Model 110 provides a more cost effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions than previous models.

Many benefits are attributed to these new technologies. The increased storage capacity, three times the capacity of the IBM 7206 Model 005, can reduce the number of tape cartridges required, resulting in savings in cartridge costs and tape inventory maintenance. The 7206 Model 110 achieves a new level of reliability by incorporating a media recognition feature which allows only data grade tape cartridges to be used for writing data. Also provided are improved read-channel performance, enhanced self-cleaning, energy-saving features, and fewer components than DDS-2 models. A field-proven mechanism that uses an electronic tape path to ensure long life for the head, drum and key components is also featured in the Model 110.

Reading and writing on DDS-3 tape cartridges, as well as two-generation backward compatible DDS tape cartridges, provides for migration and data interchange.

Model 220

Data storage capacity of 4GB to 20GB* (8GB to 40GB* with 2:1 data compression)

• Data transfer rate from 400KB to 3.0MB/sec (800KB to 6.0MB/sec with compression)

• Read and write in DDS-2, DDS-3 and DDS-4 tape cartridges providing for ease of migration and interchange

• Non-data grade media rejection which will not permit writing on audio-grade media

• Read after write data verification which ensures that data is written accurately

• File access average search speed of 40 seconds on any part of a DDS-4 tape

The IBM 7206 Model 220 External 4mm DDS-4 Tape Drive provides the advanced performance, improved capacity, and high reliability demanded in a data storage solution for the IBM RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. Adapted to specifically exploit RS/6000 manageability features, this streaming tape drive is ideally suited for critical backup, restore and archive operations.

Technology enhancements to Digital Data Storage (DDS) technology continue and are implemented in the IBM 7206 Model 220. Metal Particle 3 tape (MP+++), implemented in DDS-4 tape technology, is manufactured with a flexible and corrosion resistant magnetic coating which extends tape storage life. Additionally, thinner tracks on the tape allow for increased tape storage capacity. With 2:1 compression, cartridge capacity is increased up to 40GB per cartridge, and a sustained data transfer rate of up to 21.6 GB per hour is possible. The attributes of the low-cost, high capacity tape cartridge combined with the performance characteristics of the 7206 Model 220 DDS-4 Tape Drive provide an excellent price/capacity proposition.

These factors provide many benefits. Maintenance of tape inventory as well as tape costs may be reduced as a result of the higher capacity tape cartridges. The enhanced data transfer rate, nearly three times faster than the IBM 7206 Model 110 DDS-3 Tape Drive, saves operator time. Engineering enhancements such as a simplified tape path, improved air flow, and automatic drum and head cleaning contribute to the drive’s high reliability. Data integrity is enhanced with non-data grade media rejection and read after write data verification.

Reading and writing on DDS-4 tape cartridges, as well as two-generation backward compatible DDS tape cartridges (DDS-2 and DDS-3), provides for migration and data interchange
