IBM Ultrium External
Tape Drive |
Today, all types of businesses
rely on data as a key corporate asset. You must be able to access data
quickly and reliably, archive large databases and retrieve them when needed,
and complete these tasks economically--whether you are using a
high-performance network server or an individual workstation.
The IBM Ultrium External Tape Drive is the building block of a new family of
scalable, flexible tape solutions. By fully leveraging advanced Linear
Tape-Open (LTO) technology, the IBM Tape Drive is ideal for handling the
backup, save/restore, and archival data storage needs of a wide range of
small systems.
The IBM Ultrium External Tape Drive has a capacity of up to 200 GB with
compression (2:1). As your needs grow, you can build on this storage
investment by moving to the IBM Tape Autoloader (compressed data capacity of
up to 1.4 TB). As your storage requirements grow, you can choose the IBM
Ultrium Scalable Tape Library (compressed data capacity of up to 14.4 TB) or
the IBM UltraScalable Tape Library (compressed data capacity of up to 496.2
TB). The tape media is interchangeable among all four devices.
With its higher capacity and performance, the IBM Ultrium External Tape
Drive is an excellent alternative to DLT, 1/4-inch, 4 mm, or 8 mm tape
drives. It has a sustained data transfer rate of up to 30 MB/sec
(compressed). |

Why IBM LTO? |
LTO is an open tape architecture developed by
a consortium of three world-class storage producers. Open means availability
from multiple vendors. IBM means a new technology from a time-proven and
innovative tape technology leader. IBM Ultrium drives share best-of-breed
technology with advanced multi-track recording capabilities,
magneto-resistive (MR) head and servo technologies, and high recording
densities. Error correction code (ECC) function helps provide data
integrity.
IBM also provides worldwide service and technical support when you invest in
an IBM Ultrium solution-including a complete array of servers, software,
printers, and storage devices. |

LTO Ultrium 100 GB Data Cartridge
|
Highlights:
Provides breakthroughs in capacity, performance, and reliability for
midrange and network tape storage environments
Contains half-inch metal particle tape that
features a native data capacity of
100 GB and a compressed data capacity of 200 GB
Includes a Linear Tape-Open** Cartridge
Memory (LTO**-CM) chip that contains cartridge-specific information to
communicate with Ultrium tape drives during loading/unloading via a radio
frequency component
Adheres to widely supported Linear Tape-Open
(LTO) design specifications
High capacity
By combining extremely high storage capacity (100 GB native, 200 GB
with 2:1 compression), performance, and reliability, IBM LTO Ultrium* Data
Cartridges continue the IBM commitment to enhancing tape technology. IBM LTO
Ultrium Data Cartridges are the latest in a long line of IBM data cartridges
that are providing superior media quality and reliability for organizations
around the world.
Cost effectiveness
Increasing cartridge capacity and performance can help reduce the amount of
equipment, space, and human intervention required for daily tape operations.
In addition, reducing the number of cartridges needed for backup and restore
operations can lower operational costs throughout the enterprise.
Advanced LTO-CM chip
IBM LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges--along with IBM Ultrium drives--support the
Linear Tape-Open Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM) chip, which enables the IBM
Ultrium drive to read and write to the data cartridge by using a radio
frequency transmission. The LTO-CM enables fast, simultaneous transfer of
cartridge-dependent data with IBM Ultrium drives during media load and
unload cycles. This simultaneous exchange is designed to improve data access
speeds by eliminating the need to read/write cartridge-dependent data from
the media after it is loaded or before it is unloaded.
Why IBM LTO?
LTO is an open tape architecture developed by a consortium of three
world-class storage producers. Open means availability from multiple
vendors. IBM means a new technology from a time-proven and innovative tape
technology leader.
The IBM LTO Ultrium data cartridge with a compressed capacity of up to 200
GB will be portable to other IBM Ultrium offerings. As your storage needs
grow, your data cartridge can continue providing value to help maximize your
investment.
