Compaq TA1000 AIT Tape Array

|
The StorageWorks TA1000 AIT Tape Array offers a
500 GB to 1 Terabyte backup solution in a 3U rack mount
configuration. The TA1000 is a self-contained tape array with 5
or 10 AIT 50 GB tape drives each in its own hot-plug carrier.
This product also features a dual SCSI bus for faster transfer,
redundant power supplies and redundant fans. Because of the
small form factor the AIT 50 GB tape drives give Compaq the
ability to meet a customers need for high capacity, high
performance in a small space. This is becoming more and more
critical as the footprint of the servers becomes compressed
while the internal storage continues to grow.
In addition, the AIT-2 Technology brings with
it a new method of indexing the data that is contained on the
tape. This MIC (Memory in Cassette) technology is an integrated
circuit chip that stores the index to data for increased
performance in HSM, RAIT, RAID, and Open System situations that
require rapid access to data.
Key Features
- Backup large volumes of data without the
hassles of waiting for robotics to move tapes
- Easier than a library to operate
- Load and Go capability with software RAIT
functionality
- Improved data band width of SCSI bus over
single tape libraries
- Larger capacity in a single tape
- Dual SCSI bus, allowing the customer to
perform simultaneous backups
Benefits at a Glance
- Uses 5 to 10 AIT 50 GB tape drives
- Hot plug capability
- Using in-house Compaq technology
- LVD Interface
- Qualified behind Windows NT 4.0, Windows
2000, and NetWare
- Supported with VERITAS Backup Exec and
Computer Associates ARCserveIT

Highlights |
| High-Capacity Small Form
Factor Backup and Restore |
| Because of the small form
factor, the AIT 50GB tape drives give Compaq the ability to meet a
customer’s need for high capacity and high performance in a small space.
This is becoming more and more critical as the footprint of the servers
becomes compressed while the internal storage continues to grow. |

| High Availability
Features |
| The TA1000 AIT Tape Array
offers a one-terabyte backup solution in a 3U rack mount configuration.
The TA1000 is a self-contained tape array with 5 or 10 AIT 50GB tape
drives each in its own hot plug carrier. This product also features a
dual redundant power supplies and redundant fans. |
| |
Hot Pluggable
Hot Pluggable technology is used for drives, power supplies and fans.
Hot Pluggable components can be replaced without powering down the
storage system. This feature significantly enhances storage system
availability. |
| |
| Availability and
Serviceability |
| Storage system units
accommodate redundant cooling fans and power supplies. All customer
removable modules and units are designed for easy removal to ensure
better serviceability. |
| |
| Advanced Intelligent
Tape (AIT) Technology |
| AIT drive employs a helical
scan recording style in which data tracks are written at an angle
relative to the edge of the tape. This provides higher density
recording, enabling Compaq customers to lower costs and increase
efficiency by storing more data on a single tape. |
| |
| Memory-In-Cassette (MIC) |
| AIT technology features
Memory-In-Cassette (MIC), a 64-Kb memory chip built into the data
cartridge which speeds access to your data. The MIC chip provides
sophisticated data access capability that allows users to load and
unload the tape at the mid-point, which helps in locating files in
seconds. |
| |
| Form Factor |
| TA1000 is only available in
a rack-mountable self-contained enclosure (3U height) supporting 10 hot
pluggable AIT drives. Because of the small form factor and its modular
design, Compaq customers can combine multiple enclosures for higher
capacity and higher performance. |
| |
| Manageability |
| Supported through Compaq
Insight Manager, alerting the administrator when tape status changes or
when rewrite/reread thresholds are exceeded. |
| |
| LED Indicators |
| Front and rear panel LEDs
are precisely located for easy assessment of overall system status and
device failures. |
| |
| Compatibility and
Integration Testing |
| Compaq’s TA1000 uses
in-house technology, which ensures the customer of full compatibility
with Compaq ProLiant Servers and controllers. Compaq thoroughly tests
products with leading software and operating systems, including VERITAS
Backup Exec and CA ARCserve. |
