The Compaq StorageWorks Advanced Intelligent Tape
(AIT) 35 GB LVD is a standalone tape device that has a native
capacity of 35 GB and a transfer speed of 4 MB/sec. This device
has a standard SCSI interface, Ultra2/LVD, for faster throughput
of SCSI commands.
The AIT 35 GB LVD product is a replacement for
the AIT 35 GB.
AIT is a step up from DAT for customers who
need higher capacity, faster transfer speed but still need the
same form factor. This technology offers best in class
performance in 8 mm alternatives, improved tape tracking and
recording stability, longer head life and power on hours.
The AIT 35 GB LVD will continue to use the 170
m and 250 m AIT 35 GB media with the Memory in Cassette (MIC).
This media uses an Advanced Metal Evaporated composition, which
means the drive seldom needs to be cleaned. The MIC offers
faster load and unload times and access your data in less than
27 seconds from anywhere on the tape.
The AIT 35 GB drive is positioned for the
departmental and workgroup segment wanting a higher capacity
tape device but at a lower cost. It is intended for customers
who have standardized on Compaq AIT technology for backup of
their Compaq AlphaServer and ProLiant servers.

Overview
The new AIT
35GB, LVD tape drive offers the customer an industry standard
configuration, which is 33% faster than the previous generation tape
drive. AIT 35GB, LVD is also available in three different
configurations, internal, external and the newest Hot Plug.
Compaq AIT 35GB, LVD Tape Drive Customer benefits include:
Backup rate 14.4 GB/hr native
AIT 35GB offers investment protection with backward compatibility
with previously written AIT 35GB, AIT-1 and TZS20 media (When using
Non-MIC media the drive will go through a re-try sequence before the
tape becomes ready. This consists of reseating the media five times
with a series of flashing LED’s. During this time the drive can’t be
accessed.)
Reduced spares inventory with a 24 hour exchange

Product Highlights
Advanced
Intelligent Tape (AIT) Technology
AIT drive
employs a helical scan recording style in which data tracks are written
at an angle relative to the edge of the tape. This provides higher
density recording, enabling Compaq customers to lower costs and increase
efficiency by storing more data on a single tape.
Memory-In-Cassette
AIT technology
features Memory-In-Cassette (MIC) a 64-Kb memory chip built into the
data cartridge which speeds access to your data. The MIC chip provides
sophisticated data access capability that allows users to load and
unload the tape at the mid-point, which helps in locating files in
seconds.
Disaster
Recovery - DRTape
The AIT 35GB
tape drive has been improved with the added feature of DRTape. DRTape
insures that in case of a system failure, you will be able to restore
your system from a single tape.
What is Disaster Recovery: An AIT 35GB Tape Drive that can:
Under Disaster Recovery (DR) situations, ID itself as a boot
device
Hold enough information to bring the system up for a DR restore
from tape
Is completely self contained in that it needs no other software or
CD’s to restore the system.
Note: This option is not currently available with hot plug tape
configuration
Manageability
Supported
through Compaq Insight Manager™, alerting the administrator when tape
status changes or when rewrite/reread thresholds are exceeded.
Compaq is now offering TSMC – Tape Storage Management Console with every
tape drive. This utility allows customers to upgrade their tape drive
firmware when necessary.
Hot Plug
Able to mix
tape drives and hard drives on the same SCSI Bus without slowing down
the performance of the system.
Supported on Compaq’s Smart Array 5300 controller and Integrated Smart
Array controller and selected AlphaServer host bus adapters.
Hot Plug components can be replaced without powering down the system.
This feature significantly enhances system availability.
Mix and
Match Capabilities
With Compaq’s
hot plug tape configuration, customers are now able to mix 1" hot plug
hard drives and tape drives on the same SCSI bus even if they are using
Compaq’s Integrated Smart Array Controller or the Smart Array 5300
series controller. Customers will no longer need a separate controller
for their tape configurations. Similar support is available on selected
AlphaServers host bus adapters.
High
Availability
With hot plug
configurations, you never have to take down your system to replace a
failed or non-responding tape device. This increases your uptime for
customer accessibility to your systems.
Compatibility and Integration Testing
Compaq’s AIT
35GB tape drives are fully supported and compatible with Compaq ProLiant
Servers and controllers. Compaq thoroughly tests products with leading
