RAMSan: PCI
Storage Flash Storage
RAM Storage

The RamSan-10 and the
RamSan-20 are both high performance Flash SSDs on a PCI card. This
family of SSD products establishes the reference standard in PCI Flash
architectures. Their simplicity and affordability bring high performance
storage solutions within reach of mainstream businesses and applications. The
RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 display TMS' unique ability to architect and
engineer the future of solid state storage, leveraging over 30 years of SSD
innovation and 10 years of PCI bus-based architectural expertise.
Both product designs leverage the power of Texas Memory
Systems’ Fault Tolerant Flash (FTF) architecture. Because of their
comprehensive on-board management suite, the RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 have
little to no impact on host resources and data is not lost during server
crashes or power loss. The RamSan-20 is a high capacity enterprise grade PCIe
SLC Flash product and provides far better sustained performance and
reliability characteristics than competing products. The RamSan-10 is ideally
optimized for applications requiring extraordinarily low latencies at smaller
capacity points such as those run on scientific workstations or stand alone
servers.
Both cards are easily installed in a server to
transfer data much faster than other Flash drives and hundreds of times faster
than traditional mechanical hard disks. They allow users to simply snap in an
extraordinarily fast SSD for caching, application acceleration, and ruggedness
without the space, power, and management overhead associated with traditional
storage expansion.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 offer a simple,
economical choice for accelerating single-server applications that require
large, fast buffer areas and those that are random access intensive.
Databases, video editing, financial modeling, data acquisition, simulations,
and Web content are a select few examples of applications that will benefit
from the use of both of the cards' remarkable capabilities.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 have the standard
features you would expect from an enterprise storage design. Quite simply,
they are designed for performance, reliability, and ease of use, with these
key features:
- A storage system on a PCI card
- Low overhead, high performance
- High IOPS, bandwidth, and capacity
- Low power requirements
- ECC and RAID
- Embedded wear-leveling PowerPC
- Quick and easy to install
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 both deliver a complete
storage system on a PCIe card. They minimize latency between processors and
storage and are easily installed in minutes. The RamSan-10 delivers 225GB of
usable Flash, making it an ideal design for those applications that require
extremely low latencies at a smaller capacity. The RamSan-20 delivers 450GB of
usable Flash, making it the highest capacity enterprise class PCIe SLC Flash
card on the market today. To ensure the greatest possible performance and
reliability, these cards both utilize Single Level Cell (SLC) Flash. And both
also incorporate extra Flash capacity for write acceleration and two levels of
data protection, ECC and RAID.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 both offer unparalleled
sustained performance, delivering 120,000 IOPS for random read operations. With
their fast PCIe connection, the RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 have a direct
low-overhead connection to main memory that eliminates disk controllers, disk
cables, and disk chassis.
One of the single greatest assets the RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 possess is the
use of an onboard CPU. With an onboard processor to manage the Flash memory
functions, these cards stand head and shoulders above the rest in the PCI Flash
SSD market. Their design limits the theft of CPU cycles or RAM space from the
host system, thus allowing the host system to do its core job of processing and
managing application requests and needs.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 use SLC NAND Flash for the storage medium. SLC
is superior in almost every way: faster, more resilient, and much easier to
manage than its consumer counterpart, MLC.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 are easy to install and easy to manage block
level devices. Once their driver has been installed, they appear as a standard
block device. At this point the products may be partitioned and formatted to a
file system, not unlike any other enterprise hard disk drive arrangement.
Storage data integrity is provided by the use of SLC Flash chips with two
independent methods of ECC. Each Flash chip incorporates an ECC data field
within the chip for initial checking. Additionally, each Flash controller on the
RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 is responsible for 10 and 20 Flash chips
respectively in RAID-5 configuration, thereby eliminating any single chip
failure from corrupting data storage. The Flash wear-leveling algorithm runs on
the embedded PowerPC, providing real-time quality assurance independent of the
host computer.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 were designed from the chip up with the
enterprise in mind. With their onboard processor design, 2 levels of error
correction coding, RAID functionality for the Flash, use of SLC Flash, and a
sophisticated wear leveling algorithm, the RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 are both
truly enterprise ready, fault resilient PCIe SSDs.
The RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 both provide extraordinary performance while
typically consuming a very modest 15 watts of power. Being this powerful yet
Earth friendly can only be described using one word, PEP - Powerful,
Efficient Performance. At 120,000 sustained IOPs and only 15 watts, the
RamSan-10 and the RamSan-20 both deliver 8,000 sustained read IOPS per watt
drawn.
