Implement disk-to-disk backup with StoreVault S500 Eliminate the tape backup window, enjoy instant restores, and dramatically improve data protection and availability. challenges • Shrinking the tape backup window makes it difficult or impossible to back up as often as you’d like • Tape restores take too long, are difficult, and are confusing • Changing out tapes and storing them is undependable, as well as being an administrative burden solution • Make the StoreVault S500 the target for your backup software (instead of tape) primary benefits • Reduces backup time dramatically • Restores files instantly via Snapshot™ technology • Ensures higher levels of data integrity and protection with less effort • Allows you to continue working with your existing backup software detail Using the StoreVault S500 as a disk-to-disk target provides you with faster backup times, the protection of RAID-DP™ and Snapshot copies, and the flexibility to archive to tape during business hours without interrupting normal operations. NDMP ensures easy integration into any third-party environment. Client backup becomes feasible with tools like IBM’s Tivoli CDP (Continuous Data Protection) to ensure that all data goes to disk. From there, the data can be protected by making Snapshot copies and eventually get archived to tape. Faster backups. The S500 is than tape. Tape backup jobs that typically require 4 hours can be completed in less than 00 minutes with the S500. In addition, there are no tapes to load, unload, or rotate. Instant restores. The advanced Snapshot technology captures point-in-time images of the file system. These allow you to restore lost data almost instantly, without digging through tape archives. The S500 is capable of storing up to 250 Snapshot images—more than any other competing system—so you could schedule to have a Snapshot copy made of your data every hour of every business day, for example, and go more than a full month without backing up to tape, yet still be able to recover any lost data instantly, without losing more than 1 hour of activity. And because Snapshot images are read-only, they can be archived to tape during business hours without impacting operations. Greater data protection. The S500 offers dual redundant, hot-swappable power, cooling and drives, plus multiple levels of RAID protection, including RAID DP, which delivers 10,000 times more protection than traditional RAID 5. Even if two disks fail simultaneously, you won’t lose data. Configuration flexibility. If you want to deploy a NAS D2D backup scheme today, with a plan to migrate to iSCSI or Fibre Channel SAN D2D backup scheme later, the S500 will adapt easily and seamlessly. CONVENTIONAL TAPE BACKUP: All backup data must move over the LAN, creating bottlenecks and slowdowns. Tape write speeds are not as fast and disk. Together, this combination can prevent completion of backup within shrinking backup window.
DISK-TO-DISK BACKUP, STAGE 1: Minimal change to backup architecture The StoreVault S500 replaces file servers and becomes target for data on application servers and clients. Amount of data to be backed up decreases, plus S500 write times are radically faster than tape, for much faster backup. Also, data on S500 is more secure due to its Advanced Protection Architecture (RAID, Snapshots, redundant drives, power and cooling, etc.) .
DISK-TO-DISK BACKUP, STAGE 2: All data is consolidated on S500...and minimal backup data travels over the LAN. An existing backup server can control tape devices and jobs on the S500 via NDMP. The majority of backup traffic now travels over a local SCSI connection and not the LAN. Snapshots of data on the S500 can be backed up to the tape archive any time with zero impact to active volumes. Overall, centralized data is more secure with the S500’s Advanced Protection Architecture (RAID, Snapshots, redundant drives, power and cooling, etc.). frequently asked questions Q. Why is disk-based backup preferable to tape-based backup? A. Most people report dramatically faster backups when the target is a disk. More importantly, backing up to a StoreVault can allow you to also make use of Snapshot and StoreVault Replication technology.Overall, Disk-to-disk backup with StoreVault: - Reduces the backup window - Speeds up restores - Allows backup data to be replicated offsite - Doesn’t disrupt the existing infrastructure - Allow Snapshot copies to be created, which can be moved to tape at any time
Q. What if I want to continue to back up to tape for archive purposes?A. Good idea. Disk-to-disk-to-tape for offsite archive can be very important for certain businesses. The StoreVault S500 can support direct-attached tape via a SCSI connection, letting files be archived from the StoreVault to tape. More intelligent solutions use NDMP to give control of the tape device to a centralized backup package like Symantec Backup Exec or CommVault Galaxy Express. For more information, read our datasheets and white papers on NDMP.
Q. What if I back up to disk and there is a disaster? A. With a StoreVault, you will be using Advanced Protection Architecture to ensure that data is available, protected, and safe. If RAID-DP isn’t enough, StoreVault Replication software can copy data to an offsite S500 for recovery in the event of a disaster. We usually don’t recommend storing all of your data strictly on disk—that’s why Snapshot copies provide you with a perfect way to migrate data to tape on your own schedule, even during productive hours.system requirements hardware • StoreVault S500 (NAS or iSCSI SAN backup) • OPTION: Direct-attached backup • SCSI cable • StoreVault SCSI port on S500 • OPTION: Fibre Channel SAN • Third-party Fibre Channel HBAs (for Exchange/SQL servers) • StoreVault Fibre Channel HBA (for S500) software • Your existing backup software • OPTION: if you choose to install iSCSI or Fibre Channel HBAs, they will include device management software for installing and configuring your SAN network • Ethernet network • OPTION: if you choose to deploy a Fibre Channel SAN, additional cabling, adapters, and one Fibre Channel switch will be required Let us help you, call 800-663-5523 or click here. |
