FC SAN extension to IP Storage

Fibre Channel (FC) SANs are popular within large enterprises and data centers.

IT managers want to leverage their FC SAN investments towards distributed LANs, branches and subsidiaries, improving data availability and remote backup and providing better capacity utilization. These factors call for an access of FC SANs via block-level iSCSI SAN or file-level NAS storage networking. RELDATA Unified Storage Gateways provide both iSCSI SAN and CIFS/NFS NAS connectivity to the FC SAN enabling scalable Ethernet data consolidation on block- and file-level.

For example; a central enterprise data center with an FC SAN and various distributed subsidiaries or departments with LAN islands. Client workstations and servers connected to the separate LAN islands might need access to the FC SAN data of the central data center for sharing research information or would like to backup their data on the FC SAN. You need a way to connect those LAN islands to the FC SAN. With RELDATA Unified Storage Gateway, the FC SAN could be easily extended with a unified iSCSI SAN and NAS storage network to attached Ethernet infrastructures. If the data of the distributed LAN clients and servers are consolidated with a unified departmental RELDATA iSCSI SAN/NAS storage infrastructure, an easy remote data protection solution between LAN islands and FC SAN could be set up, replicating iSCSI target volumes and whole filesystems for backup and disaster recovery.

Even FC SAN to FC SAN replication is facilitated taking multiple RELDATA Unified Storage Gateways. The remote volume replication is done over TCP/IP (WANs) using iSCSI data transfer. There is no big difference compared to traditional iFCP and FCIP gateways, used for FC SAN data replication. iSCSI, iFCP or FCIP data packages are basically all wrapped SCSI data packages, which have to be converted to native FC packages in the relevant gateways anyway. Also file data protection solutions with the currently emerging WAFS file replication technology could be solved in many cases with a RELDATA Unified Storage Gateway using rsync-based file replication.
