Sunstar Offers New Data Storage Solution for Small to Midsized Businesses

Sunstar Co, Los Angeles based value added reseller (VAR) of data storage products, recently announced that it will add a new product to its line for the traditionally underrepresented small to midsized business (SMB) sector.  The recently released NetApp StoreVault gives SMB’s access to enterprise quality network data storage products at a price that smaller businesses can afford.

Prior to the NetApp Storevault, SMB’s had to either spend as much as a large corporation for enterprise grade network data storage or rely on data storage products with less functionality.  “SMB’s haven’t truly been catered to in terms of data storage,” says Gavin Rosenberg, marketing director at Sunstar.  “But the fact is that SMB’s are an important and growing part of the business sector and we’re excited to have a quality product to offer now.”

The NetApp StoreVault product line is similar to NetApp’s FAS200 series geared toward large organizations.  Unlike enterprise network data storage products that start at around $15,000, the NetApp StoreVault S500 begins at $5,000.  The NetApp StoreVault is geared toward SMB’s with critical data storage needs between .5 TB and 6 TB.  “The nice thing about it [NetApp StoreVault S5000] is that it’s completely scalable,” says Rosenberg, “they can start with 1 TB and add space as their data load grows.”

The NetApp StoreVault network data storage device can function as a NAS file server as well as an iSCSI SAN simultaneously.  This fall, Sunstar will also carry a NetApp StoreVault product that handles Fibre Channel connectivity as well.

Sunstar is serious about providing solutions for the SMB market that has been lacking feasible network data storage needs.  Though EMC was the first to release a line of comparably priced small business network data storage products, Sunstar chose to wait for a more robust solution to add to their product offering.  “The S500 is specifically engineered for the SMB,” Rosenberg says, “not an enterprise product stripped down in order to reduce the price.”

Sunstar’s reasons for choosing to represent the NetApp StoreVault product family are two-fold.  First, the NetApp StoreVault network data storage products will only be available through VAR’s as opposed to product only e-tailers, which reveals NetApp as a more customer-centric vendor.  The second is that NetApp has taken the initiative to build an entirely new division, “NetApp StoreVault,” that is completely separate from the enterprise division.  “They’re going to be hungry to make it work” says Rosenberg, which is the kind of vendor Sunstar likes to bring to its customers.
