Network Attached Storage - NAS

The purpose of network attached storage (NAS) is to provide more hard disk space to network servers. Network data storage devices do not perform the functions of other servers in a server-centric system such as authentication, email, or file management. In short, network attached storage (NAS) allows multiple computers to share a single storage space for greater efficiency beyond managing individual hard disks. 

There are a number of network data storage devices on the market today. Some of the most well recognized network data storage devices include:

The network data storage device delivers the data to the end user while the server does all of the processing of the data. Network attached storage (NAS) is more economical, fast, and easier than are general purpose servers. 

A NAS network data storage device is most often attached to a LAN and given its own IP address. A (NAS) network attached storage device is composed of multi-disk RAID systems and software and can be integrated with a more sophisticated storage attached network (SAN) when the need arises.
