The 3500 Tape Drive or Tape Library System

The 3584 tape library was recently renamed the “IBM System Storage TS 3500 Tape Library. Perhaps the “84” suffix was confusing to users since it works with 3490 series equipment like 3592 tape drive. The 3584 tape library is designed for mid to enterprise environments with open system technology.

The 3592 tape drive, also referred to as the 3592-J1A, is designed for absolutely critical data. The 3592-J1A offers WORM (Write Once Read Many) functionality for enhanced data retention needs. The 3592 tape drive (3592-J1A) can coexist with the 3490 and 3590 tape drive or with the 3592-E05, the 3584 tape library, the 3494 Virtual Tape Server, and some StorageTek tape libraries.

Less expensive than the 3590 tape drive is the 3592-E05. The 3592-E05 is a viable option as it reduces the number of drives and cartridges comparatively along with the floor space required to store the 3590 tape drive. The 3592-E05 has 2 different models. The first is a single cartridge rack device with no autoloader and the second 3592-E05 model is the 3592 tape library. The 3592 tape library is most commonly referred to as just the 3592-E05.

When it comes to choosing tape drives and tape libraries, it’s important to make choices that won’t overwork your drives. Every tape drive comes with a limit to the amount it can be used each day before it is considered overworked. If you need to run your tape drive all day, be sure to choose a drive with a 100% duty cycle. Another critical point is to ensure that data is supplied fast enough. Otherwise the tape can strain from the constant start and stop motion and jeopardize the data integrity.
