3480 Tape Drive and 3490 Tape Drive Solutions

IBM released the first 3480 tape drive in 1984 with tape head sizes of 18 track or a 36 track. The 3580 tape drive is still used as a primary device to back up computer data today. Today the 3480 tape drive is made by numerous manufacturers including Quantam, StorageTek, Hewlett Packard, Overland, Exabyte, Breece Hill, Sony, Qualstar, Adic, Certance, and Tandberg Data.

The 3490E tape drive, often referred to as the 3490 tape drive, came later with the ability to store up to 800 MB on one tape. On the outside, the 3480 tape drive and the 3490E tape drive (3490 tape drive) look almost identical. However, the tape media inside is different. However, the 3480 tape drive can record using 3490E tape drive media. On the contrary, not all 3490 tape drives can record on 3480 tape drive media.

The 3490-F11 is a subsystem for the 3490E tape drive that can read both 36 track and 18 track tapes. The 3490-F11 can store up to 10 tapes and has a storage capacity of 24GB. The 3490-F11 is a popular option for off site data storage and disaster recovery.

Perhaps the most adaptable though is the 3494 library. The 3494 library is highly customizable and perfect for those who need to design a custom configuration. Though the 3494 library is an IBM product, it is cross compatible with non 1BM products as well.
