| |
| Today, virtually every key market
segment has some applications that support the IBM 3995 Optical Library.
Businesses are continually faced with new challenges and competitive
pressures. All industries are routinely affected by reorganization, the need
to be more cost effective, and their customers' demands to be responsive and
more service oriented. |
| |
| These and other business hurdles
are being overcome through the effective management of information. New
application solutions are being enabled through the use of low cost, high
capacity, optical storage and are showing high returns on their investment.
Properly managed information, which was previously buried in microfiche or
stacks of paper, can improve user productivity, provide competitive
leadership and facilitate vital decision making on a timely basis.
|
| |
| The 3995 C-Series can handle
thousands of on-line requests per day with faster access than tape,
paper, or microfiche and at a lower cost than magnetic disk. With direct
random access multiple users can access the same information concurrently.
Several major companies have realized substantial dollar savings by
replacing their microfiche and paper with an IBM optical solution. The IBM
3995 Optical Library C-Series offers such storage advantages. |
| |
| The C-Series Optical Library is
ideally suited for the storage of less frequently accessed data, historical
or archived data and storage-intensive applications. The objective is to
have the right data on the right media at the right time. IBM's 3995 Optical
Library provides fast, on-line random access to aged data that does
not require sub-second response time. |

| The
3995 Optical Library C-Series offers: |
| |
| Up to five library capacities
available - delivering from 104GB to 1341GB
(1.34TB) of automated optical storage per library model. Each model
includes configuration flexibility with options for additional internal
drives on most library models. In addition to providing a range of
models and capacities, the 3995 C-Series provides connection
capability to a wide range of processing environments. Local area
network, open systems, AS/400, and S/390 attachments are supported when
combined with appropriate software. |
| |
| World class functionality
is accomplished through IBM's first-in-the-industry Extended
Multifunction optical drives. A single optical disk drive provides the
capability of reading and writing all three types of storage formats:
Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM), Magneto-Optical (MO) rewritable, and
Continuous Composite WORM (CCW). The Permanent Write-Once-Read-Many
(WORM) utilizes unalterable recording media which can never be erased.
Magneto-Optical (MO) rewritable media provides a solution for short-term
data retention and/or reuse of the media. Continuos Composite WORM (CCW)
utilizes MO rewritable standards but provides write once functionality
by using software protection in the drive controller. This innovative
multi-function drive automatically recognizes and adjusts to media type
and density - no intervention required. |
| |
| Double the capacity
over previous 5.25 inch 2.6GB optical technology. IBM is
using industry-standard 5.25 inch 5.2GB optical cartridges, providing
you with a lower cost for increased optical storage. |
| |
| Enhanced performance
with up to 4.6MB/sec read data rate, up to 10MB/sec (synchronous) burst
data transfer rate, and, on most models, options for additional internal
optical drives and a dual gripper picker on the autochanger.
|
| |
| Investment protection
is delivered through backward compatibility. This provides continued
access to data written on previous generations of IBM 5.25 inch optical
media. The granularity and growth capability of the IBM 3995 C-Series
lets you choose the appropriate capacity to meet current needs and to
add additional capacity when needed - possibly reducing total cost of
ownership. |
| |
| Multiple reliability
features incorporated in the IBM 3995 C-Series make it unsurpassed in
up-time performance. The efficient hardware has a minimum of moving
parts which translates to hardware reliability and data availability.
Many reliability features have been designed into the IBM 3995 Optical
Library. For example, a rack and pinion autochanger mechanism has been
incorporated because it provides greater reliability than belt-drive
mechanisms. Sophisticated media management not only assures ease of use
and improved performance, but also reduces cartridge movement and its
associated wear |

| |
| The Enhanced IBM 3995 Optical Library
C-Series models are the newest generation of reliable, cost effective
optical storage solutions that can address your business needs. The C-Series
provides significantly increased capacities through the combination of
larger libraries and greater capacity of optical media. Each 5.25 inch
optical cartridge now has the capacity to store up to 5.2GB of
information. Placed in a C-Series library which can hold 20 to 258
cartridges, mountains of paper and stacks of microfiche can be reduced to a
manageable, low cost storage solution for your RS/6000 environment. There
are five 3995 C-Series SCSI-2 Attach Models available with capacities from
104GB to 1.34TB. |
| |
| The 3995 is an excellent solution for open
systems applications requiring centralized online storage, random retrieval
of information, concurrent access and moderate performance. Industry leading
software solutions for many environments, including Sun Solaris, HP-AX,
Windows NT, and others are available from IBM, IBM business partners, or
third party solution providers. |
| |
| The Enhanced C-Series Optical Library is
ideally suited for the storage of less frequently accessed data, historical
or archived data, and storage-intensive applications. IBM's 3995 Optical
Library provides fast, on-line random access to aged data that does
not require sub-second response time. Because of the low cost of ownership
provided by the IBM 3995 C-Series Optical Library, innovative business
solutions can now meet the growing demands of the marketplace. Readily
available information will provide improved productivity and increased
service levels which lead to a competitive advantage. |
| |
| IBM's 3995 C-Series provides a choice
of Permanent Write-Once- Read-Many (WORM),Continuous Composite WORM (CCW)
and rewritable optical cartridges, all of which can reside in the same
library. These can be read or written by any drive in the library. This
provides the flexibility of placing data on the media type which matches its
usage and retention requirements. Since the optical cartridges are
removable, infrequently accessed, or aging data can be stored on a shelf or
in a vault until needed. Because optical media has a useful life measured
in hundreds of years, important records can be safely stored for
extended periods of time. |

Each model contains: |
| • |
One or more Extended Multifunction
optical disk drives (drives that read and write more than one
type of storage medium) that use 5.25 inch optical storage
cartridges. |
| |
|
| • |
A single cartridge input/output
station to allow cartridges to be entered
into a library or removed from a library. |
| |
|
| • |
A library picker mechanism,
called an autochanger, is mechanically robust and the "heart" of the
library. The autochanger picker contains two grippers which allow
the autochanger "picker"to transport two cartridges simultaneously.
The autochanger moves optical cartridges between the input/output
station, the cartridge storage slots, and the optical disk drives.
|
| |
|
| • |
Closed loop air cooling
system which does not draw outside air and virtually eliminates the
possibility of airborne contamination. |
