Network Attached Storage 300 series - Model 326

The IBM Network Attached Storage 300 was designed to meet your
storage requirements across many demanding environments. With rack configuration
flexibility, the IBM NAS 300 is an excellent choice for use in departmental and
small enterprise applications and it provides an affordable but robust solution
for the storage needs of either a large branch office or department, or a small
enterprise. In these environments the IBM NAS 300 is well suited for support of
mission critical tasks such as accounts receivable processing, payroll support
or customer service support.
| The 300 offers all the same
features and benefits as the 200 series products, but with these additional
advantages: |
| |
|
•
|
A second high-performance server

| IBM, NAS and
Storage Networking |
| The IBM TotalStorage™ Network Attached
Storage 300 is part of the overall IBM Storage Networking offering of
hardware, software and services. IBM network attached storage (NAS) products
are designed to enable users to increase the flexibility, efficiency and
effectiveness of storage networking solutions and deployments. Based on an
open-system concept, IBM NAS products are also designed to make future
storage expansion as easy as installation is today. |
| |
| Fast access to data |
| The IBM NAS 300 is a tightly integrated
collection of powerful subsystems assembled into a single appliance.
Designed to provide NAS support for the departmental or small enterprise
environment, the IBM NAS 300 is preloaded with optimized software and can
operate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Redundant engines, dual RAID cards
and dual Fibre Channel hubs are part of a high- performance, fault-tolerant
design that helps minimize downtime caused by failure of any single element
within the storage system. |
| |
| Cross-platform
data sharing |
| The IBM NAS 300 is designed for use in both
enterprise and departmental environments that have file-serving requirements
across Windows or heterogeneous Windows and UNIX clients. Because of its
multiple protocol support of CIFS (Windows), NFS (UNIX), HTTP, FTP,
AppleTalk and NetWare, the IBM NAS 300 eliminates the need for a separate
server for each protocol and enables clients to share files with protocols
other than their own. The IBM NAS 300 can help you
perform the following mission- critical tasks:
- Remote or centralized order entry
- Payroll file storage and processing
- Accounts receivable storage and processing
- Communication network monitoring
- Customer support
- Backups of critical user data

| Designed for nondisruptive
scalable growth |
As storage networks become more complex,
organizations must find cost-effective ways to manage the exponential growth
of their storage needs. To prepare for short- and long-term storage
requirements, organizations must have storage systems that can grow as their
networking capacity needs increase. The IBM NAS 300 can scale from 109.2GB
to 6.611TB of hard disk storage to meet both
current and future storage needs. Using Fibre Channel technology in its
hubs, RAID controllers and hard disk drives, the IBM NAS 300 is designed for
performance, even in its maximum configuration.
|
| |
| High
system availability translates into business continuance |
| Because the IBM NAS 300 is designed to
support 24x7 operations, it incorporates a variety of high-reliability,
high-availability features. These features include redundant hot-swap power
supplies and hard disk drives as well as dual RAID cards, Fibre Channel hubs
and engines. With this design, the IBM NAS 300 supports an organization"s
operating ability even if a subsystem failure occurs. |
| |
| IBM
Director Agent |
| The IBM Director Agent, with its Universal
Manageability Services, works with the IBM Director Console to help manage
systems intelligently. It functions as the client-side software for use with
IBM Director, but can also be used independently of the IBM Director Console
for added flexibility and remote management for both IBM and non-IBM
systems. This client management application is designed to allow IT
administrators to view, monitor and control systems from its easy-to-use Web
interface.
The Director Agent communicates with physical devices
(BIOS, LAN adapters and storage devices) and also logical devices (networks,
operating systems, registries and applications) to surface data and monitor
status. Data updates and alerts are organized into specialized Common
Information Model (CIM) providers with objects that expose properties,
events and methods. CIM properties and events can be translated into Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) variables and traps.
The Director Agent provides general system information
including details on the operating system, basic system hardware, memory,
network devices, ports and adapters. In addition, proactive systems-
management functions include power management, system shutdown capabilities
(including services for Microsoft Windows NT®), AssetID and Alert on LAN
configuration, event logs and system monitors.
To help obtain continued uptime, IBM Director provides an
interface to the following Integrated Systems Management features:
|
| |
- Advanced Systems Management processor
- Light-Path Diagnostics for using LEDs to quickly
identify a failed part
- Predictive Failure Analysis® with user-selected alert
levels for monitoring CPUs, memory, fans and power supplies
- Automated paging
- Optional Remote Supervisor Adapter PCI Card for network
alerts via IBM Director
|
| |
| High-level
performance |
| The IBM NAS 300 is designed to
provide exceptional Windows performance and excellent Windows/UNIX
performance for multiprotocol environments. Its powerful dual engines and
Fibre Channel technology help bring high performance, robustness and power
to NAS processing. With both engines actively involved in meeting client
demand, this model is designed for maximum dual- computing performance to
support data-intensive or mission- critical applications. The IBM NAS 300
can support video file serving, order entry, payroll, accounts receivable,
customer support and online monitoring of critical communication networks. |
| |
| Multi-layered
data protection |
| The IBM NAS 300 incorporates a
variety of features to help safeguard an organization"s most valuable
asset--its data. Offering a choice of RAID levels, the IBM NAS 300 helps to
protect against individual disk failure. It also provides several backup
methods, including support for popular backup software such as Tivoli®
Storage Manager™ (TSM). The TSM agent and client are preinstalled on the
product. In addition to RAID and backup support, the
IBM NAS 300 includes on-disk data protection. Columbia Data Products®
Persistent Storage Manager™ (PSM) can create up to 250 persistent True
Image™ views of data. Administrators can schedule the creation of these
point-in-time views, and with the proper permissions, users can usually
restore previous file levels without administrator involvement.
Administrators can typically use PSM to restore entire
drives and volumes in a single step, saving precious IT time by eliminating
the need to drag and drop thousands of files back to the original location.
By incorporating its own open file manager, PSM also enables safe and
consistent backup of in-use files. The open file manager helps reduce or
eliminate system access issues during backups, supporting 24x7 availability
to data. |
| The IBM NAS 300 provides the following data
protection capabilities: |
- Support of various RAID levels
- Backup support via Tivoli Storage Manager and other
vendors" packages
- Protection against accidental file deletions
- Client and administrator file restorations
- Administrator single-step volume and drive restorations
- Continued access to files during backups
|
| Preloaded system software
for efficient management |
| The IBM NAS 300 is preloaded with
a tightly integrated suite of software, which includes a Windows Powered
operating system tuned for storage. This preloaded software helps simplify
the installation, configuration and management of the IBM NAS 300, as
compared to general- purpose servers and other storage systems. The software
is loaded to the engine"s hard disk drive with a backup copy on CD-ROM. The
software image includes: |
| |
- Microsoft Terminal Services and IBM Director Agent,
with its Universal Manageability Services (Web-based GUI), supports
centralized management via IBM Director Management Server software Windows
NT Backup for backup capability
- IBM setup tutorial for ease of installation and
configuration
- IBM Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility for
headless setup and configuration
- Tivoli Storage Manager agent and client for storage
management and backups
- Columbia Data Products Persistent Storage Manager for
True Image data views of files, drives and volumes (backup enablement)
- WQuinn Storage Manager for SAK 2.0 software for storage
management
including quota setting and quota enforcement
