IBM Storage Solutions Storage Partners
Network Attached Storage 100 series R12
The IBM NAS 100 R12 features a 1U tabletop deployment or rack-mounting option. With a comprehensive systems management offering, it centrally manages storage for your distributed branch and remote locations . The IBM NAS 100 is designed to deliver an affordable, dedicated storage solution within a distributed or remote environment to support file sharing for office automation tasks, e-mail storage, file archiving or backup for connected clients. Because the IBM NAS 100 is designed for interoperability, it can often be integrated into existing IT infrastructures by connecting directly to existing local area net works (LANs) using existing management environments for easy deployment. The IBM NAS 100 offers the option of a SCSI controller for a variety of tape backup solutions.
Easily installable and configurable, the IBM NAS 100 is
designed to provide a cost-effective solution for customers who require network
attached storage for storage consolidation, file sharing or simply adding
incremental storage to the net work for clients and/or servers. Its support of
multiple protocols allows file sharing in Microsoft Windows, UNIX or mixed
environments and helps eliminate the need for a separate storage arrangement for
each protocol. File permissions can be enforced across platforms and its
Web-browser interface helps simplify installation. Processor — Pentium® III @ 1.26 GHz Memory — 512 MB ECC SDRAM 480 GB Hot-Swap HDD Storage capacity Network Connectivity — Two copper 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports Table top or optional rack mount Power Supply — 162 watt, auto-sensing, auto-ranging supply The IBM TotalStorage NAS 100 is a storage appliance. It is a self-contained, network attached storage system designed for distributed and remote branch locations where advanced centralized systems management, backup, and storage solutions are needed. The NAS 100 is a 1U-high, table top or 19-inch rack-mountable (using the optional feature, Rack Mounting Kit) system with a 1.26 GHz Pentium III processor, 512 MB ECC memory, four hot-swap 120 GB (physical capacity) ATA HDDs, and two copper 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports. The NAS 100 is designed to be an easy-to-install and easy-to-manage storage system. It does not use a video display, keyboard, or mouse, but rather uses LEDs to display hardware system status to simplify local monitoring.
Number of
LAN Support of CIFS (Windows), NFS (UNIX®), NetWare, Apple File Protocol, FTP, and HTTP One half-size PCI slot for SCSI adapter (64 bits/33 MHz) One Ultra2 SCSI port for tape backup (optional adapter) Two full-duplex, copper 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports 162 watt power supply The NAS 100 includes four 120 GB slim-high, 3.5-inch ATA HDDs. The rotational speed of the drives is 7200 rpm. They are all hot swappable; they can be removed or inserted with the power on. Operation of the NAS 100 is capable of continuing even with one of the drives removed. Each drive has two LEDs that indicate activity and status, located on the operator's panel (front bezel). The NAS 100 is designed to be installed either on a table top or shelf, or in a 19-inch rack. An optional rack kit (#3622) may be ordered which will allow mounting in a standard 19-inch rack.
The operating system and application code occupies the first 8 GB of each of the four HDDs. This configuration is fixed and may not be modified in any way. The system partition is mirrored between the first and second drive. The third and fourth drives contain a copy of the operating system that is used for service if needed. Thus, the operating system and application code are protected by failover in the event of a failure on any one of the drives. The user data portion of the four drives is configured by the plant to implement RAID5 for optimum use in most customer environments. This initial configuration may be reconfigured by the user. The NAS 100 supports RAID0, RAID1, and RAID5. Only New Technology File System (NTFS) files are supported. File allocation table (FAT) partitions are not supported. PCI Low-Profile SCSI Adapter (#3705) This feature permits the attachment of a Low Voltage Differential (LVD) backup tape drive. This adapter is a 64-bit, 33 MHz, PCI 2.2 compliant adapter. It provides:
The following tape drives, or equivalent, are supported by this feature:
With data transfer speeds as high as 80 Mb/s and the adoption of innovations such as "Disconnect/Reconnect," the PCI Low-Profile SCSI Adapter is designed to accommodate fast storage devices. This high data transfer rate is further enhanced by the use of "Busmastering" DMA that allows the adapter to control the transfer of data from the peripherals to the system memory, relieving the engine processors of this time-consuming burden. Only one PCI Low-Profile SCSI Adapter may be ordered with the initial order of the NAS 100. Additional adapters, up to 99, may be ordered via MES order using this feature number. Feature number 5555 must be included in such an order. Only one of this feature may be installed in the NAS 100. 120 GB Hot-Swap ATA HDD (#3127) Additional 120 GB Hot-Swap ATA HDDs may be ordered to be used as "on-the-shelf" replacements in the event of an HDD failure in the NAS 100. Because the HDDs are hot swappable, and RAID architecture provides automatic rebuilding of the data files, there is typically no disruption to data availability. Up to four spare HDDs (#3127) may be ordered with the NAS 100. Additional HDDs, up to 99, may be ordered via MES order using this feature number. Feature number 5555 must be included in such an order. Rack Mounting Kit (#3622) The Rack Mounting Kit provides a set of EIA compatible rack slides and supports which facilitates mounting the NAS 100 in a 19-inch industry-standard rack. Only one rack kit (#3622) may be ordered with the NAS 100. Additional Rack Mounting Kits, up to 99, may be ordered via MES order using this feature number. Feature number 5555 must be included in such an order. Solution Pack (#1017) The Solution Pack is "try-and-buy" software from independent software vendors and shipped on a CD-ROM. These programs are demo software that may be used for a limited time, allowing you to evaluate their applicability in your environment. These programs can be licensed directly from the vendor of the software. IBM does not provide support for this software. The software shipped on the CD-ROM include:
A maximum of one solution pack may be ordered with each NAS 100 using feature number 1017. It is only available with the initial order of the NAS 100. It is not available via MES order.
